Don Ross, age, 71, went into the arms of Jesus on Friday, February 4, 2011. He is now free of pain after almost eight years of battling cancer. Don was born July 25, 1939, in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Don was the seventh of nine children born to John and Zelma Withers Ross. Don received his education in Shidler, Oklahoma, starting first grade there and graduating with the class of 1957. He married Frieda Alberty on August 24, 1958, at the Frist Christian Church in Shidler, Oklahoma. He graduated from Oklahoma State Tech with a diesel mechanic degree in 1960. After graduating, Don, Frieda and fourmonth old son, Mark, moved to Hobbs, New Mexico, where Don worked for Watson Truck and Supply for 12 years and Star Tool for almost 5 years. A second son, Brian, was born in 1964 in Hobbs.
In 1976, Don and Larry Gray opened Larry and Dons Diesel on West County Road in Hobbs, New Mexico. They operated a very successful business until Larrys death and Dons failing health. The shop was closed in 2009.
Don loved his family and spending time with his two sons. He loved his church family in Hobbs and his second church family in Shidler, OK. He was a faithful member of First Christian Church, serving as an elder for many years he sang in the church choir and was on the Building and Grounds Committee. He was on the Board of Directors of Guadalupe Christian Camp in Queens, New Mexico. He was a Gideon and a member of the Hobbs Evening Lions Club.
Don enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, camping, going to the mountains and spending time on his farm in Oklahoma. Don also enjoyed attending and working at Guadalupe Christian Camp. He loved football and never missed a game if the Dallas Cowboys or OU was playing. He loved his home state of Oklahoma.
Don is survived by his wife, Frieda two sons, Mark and wife Tammy of California City, California, and Brian and wife Frances of Hobbs one brother, Bob Ross and wife Juanita of Kaw City, OK four sisters, Ruth Shelton of Tulsa, OK, Betsy Roe of Grove, OK, Kathryn and husband, Randal Mikeman of Oklahoma City, OK, Sue and husband, Jack Sharp of Pawhuska, OK two sistersinlaw, Virginia Ross of Shidler, OK, and Cori Ross of Broken Bow, OK brotherinlaw and sisterinlaw, Marvin Butch and Nelda Alberty Harmon of Shidler, Oklahoma and several nieces, nephews, cousins and his special buddies Griff, Ed and Stuart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Zelma Ross his inlaws Bill and Goldie Alberty three brothers, Sherman, John and Winton Ross four brothersinlaw, Carl Tinsley, Horton Shelton, James Roe and Danny Alberty and his good friend, Larry Gray.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 8, at Chapel of Hope in Hobbs, NM, from 8 a.m. 7 p.m. with the family in attendance from 5 7 p.m.
Services will be held at the First Christian Church, 305 W. Alston, Hobbs, NM, on Wednesday, February 9, at 11 a.m. Conducting the service will be Wayneard Hopkins, Rick McComas, Dennis Glasgow, Stuart Todd and Rusty Smith. A reception will follow the services and all are invited to attend.
A second service will be held at the First Christian Church in Shidler, OK, on Friday, February 11, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be at the church from 8 a.m. 10 a.m. Conducting the service will be Douglas Scott and Lynn Sullins. Graveside services will follow at Grandview Cemetery in Kaw City, OK.
A memorial has been set up in Dons name for Guadalupe Christian Camp. Please send memorials to Frist Christian Church, 305 W Alston, Hobbs, NM 88240, designated for Guadalupe Camp.
