Donald L. Garey of Hobbs, New Mexico, peacefully passed away at home in the loving arms of his family on November 6, 2008. He was born September 9, 1931, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was the son of the late Leo James and Jessie Garey of Fort Worth, Texas.
Don was the loving husband of Patricia M. Garey, who totally loved the whole man.
They were married at the Little Chapel in the Woods on the TWU campus in Denton, Texas. They were marshy;ried for 55 exciting and wonderful years together and there was never a dull moment. He was a devoted dad who adored his daughters and who adored him as well: Debbie Garey-Furst and Lisa Garey-Jones, both of Hobbs, New Mexico. Lisa's husband, Chris Jones, was a son to Don and they were great friends. He always gave so much and was very loved by his five grandshy;sons, Augie Furst and Manie Furst attending Whittier College, Whittier, California; Cason Spurlock, attending Texas AM, College Station, Texas; and Dakota Jones and Tristan Jones, both of Hobbs, New Mexico. He was affectionately known as Dado to all the kids. He treasshy;ured them all and said they are fine young men. He is surshy;vived by his younger brother, Mike Garey and wife Owen, both of Norman, Oklahoma, and his niece and nephews and their spouses, Michael and Missy Garey, Melanie and Justin Holbrook, and Matthew and Teresa Garey, also all from Oklahoma.
He graduated from Texas AM University, College Station, Texas, in 1953. He was a Colonel in the Corps and shy;received a BS in geological engineering. He was an Aggie through and through. He then served in the United States Air Force as Captain and was honshy;orably discharged in 1956. He was one of the final 200 candishy;dates selected by NASA to be one of our first astronauts out of literally thousands of applishy;cants. He received many accoshy;lades throughout his life and is listed in the nation's and world's preeminent records of leadership and achievements in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
He had a very successful career in the oil industry throughout his life and was very much a part of this community. He began his career with Gulf Oil Corporation in Andrews, Texas, as a Texas senior geologist. They then moved to New Mexico where he became president and CEO of many corporations including, but not limited to: Industrial Development Corporation in Lea County; Minerals, Inc.; Hobbs Industrial Foundation Corporation; Llano, Inc.; Pollution Control Inc.; NMESCO Fuels Inc.; Estacado Inc.; NATGAS, Inc.; Llano Co2 Inc.; Chairman, Hobbs Manpower Development Tng. Adv. Com.; Hobbs Advance Community for Mental Health; New Mexico Mapping Advance Committee; member of Hobbs Salvation Army; member executive board of Conquistador Council Boy Scouts of America; vice-chairman of New Mexico Governor's Committee for Economic Development; board of regents, College of the Southwest, member of AIPG, AAPG, and SPE of AIME; and a owner of the Broadmoor Tower.
He loved ice cream, spraying the driveway and backyard with the hose, sitting by the pool watching his family and listening to our conversations, relaxing in his recliner, and watching FOX news 247. He paid the many vet bills for all the rescued animals we found and enjoyed being able to do something for them. He had a heart for animals that had been hurt or abused. He always said, They are a lot smarter than we think they are. He loved his two dogs, Joe and Hanna, and thought they were the prettiest dogs he'd ever seen.
But most of his life was about his wife and the family. His guidance and love were immeasurable. His advice will never be forgotten. His discipline was deserved. His love will be felt and shared forever. His wit will be missed. He will live on in our hearts and we will continue to see the seeds he sowed in us and in each of his grandsons. They not only learned by his words of advice and the code of morality he set, but mostly by the way in which he lived his life, by example. He was and always will be remembered as a man of integrity.
He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt the existence of God, Jesus and Heaven and how real they are. A comforting quote that was sent to us in a card says, The same arms that welcomed Don into Heaven are the same arms that are holding each of us today.
Don's memorial service, a Celebration of his Life, will be held at First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Snyder, Hobbs, New Mexico, at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 14. Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.
