Derek Brent Reber, 15, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2018 at his home. Derek was born on December 20, 2002 in Hobbs, NM to David and Regina Reber.
Derek attended school in Lovington until second grade, then transferred to Hobbs where he completed elementary school at Stone and middle school at Houston. He had many friends and teachers who he loved and adored. There are so many wonderful memories from his experiences in the school system that will forever be cherished.
Derek loved traveling with his family and his hobby was collecting hotel key cards from all over the world. Derek loved to celebrate all holidays, but especially the birthdays of his family and friends. He was a planner and continuously created lists for future vacations or special events. Derek was an amazing artist and gifted many with his beautiful paintings and portraits. He also enjoyed singing and listening to music. Derek brought joy through his beautiful smile and genuine excitement. His laughter was infectious and could light up a room. Derek has forever impacted the lives of his family and friends, and we all admire his love for life despite his many obstacles.
Derek's fight against cancer started as a baby and we soon realized his strength and determination to overcome life's challenges. Derek's example of strength was emulated in a "Derek Strong" movement supported by his school that inspired others and ultimately led to an undefeated football season and a championship dedicated to him.
Derek filled our home with joy as he continuously showed and expressed his love for his family. His greatest qualities were love for people, gratitude, compassion, empathy, and a wonderful sense of humor. We truly know that Heaven gained a very special angel.
