David Hooten

March 1, 1933 — October 17, 2015

After a protracted battle with congestive heart failure, David Kay Hooten passed from this life into the arms of Jesus on October 17, 2015 in Lubbock, Texas at the age of 82. He leaves behind his wife Norma Jean Hooten, son, David Ray Hooten; his three daughters, Shelia Graves, Karmeta Reinert, and Terri Hooten.

David was born on March 1, 1933 at Brown Springs, Missouri, to his father Herschel Albert Hooton and mother Ruth Jane Hooton who predeceased him. He grew up on a farm in the Missouri Ozarks, with a loving family and one brother. He was an avid basketball player at the Hurley High School. He entered the United States Army in 1949. In 1956 David left the Missouri Ozarks for work in the oil and gas industry in Lea County, New Mexico. He worked for Northern Natural Gas as a roustabout early on in his career moving up to a meter technician. David, worked through business transitions of Northern Natural Gas, to Phillips Sixty-six, to Trans-Western and then to Enron. His oilfield tenure stretched to 35 years of service. After retirement from the gas field industries he and his wife started up D&N Janitorial Services taking care of the General Telephone company facilities in southeast New Mexico and into north and west-Texas districts of the phone company sites.

David married his sweetheart Norma Jean McCallister on September 16, 1951. In 1957, the family relocated to Monument, New Mexico, where David had accepted a position with Northern Natural Gas Company. There the couple lived for awhile and then moved to Hobbs and raised their four children.

David was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish with his family and co-workers over the years and later in life teaching the kids and grand children how to fish and hunt. He enjoyed a good laugh by telling jokes and having fun with friends, co-workers and family.

David is survived by his wife, Norma Hooten of Hobbs, a brother Glenn Franklin Hooton and wife Joyce of Crane, Missouri. His children; son, David Ray and wife Donna Hooten of Hobbs; Terri Hooten of Hobbs; Shelia and husband Brad Graves of Weatherford Texas; Karmeta and husband Steve Reinert of Kailua Kona, Hawaii. As well as his eight grand children, Jarrad Mason and wife Cassandra of Hobbs, Howard Mason of Monett, Missouri; Barrett Weaver and wife Pamela of Grand Prairie, Texas; Cassie Attaway and husband Lyle of Hobbs; Chris Elliot of Hobbs; Brandon Hooten and wife Jennifer of Edwards Airforce Base, California; Heather VanHooshier and husband Jessie of Hobbs and Ashley McKeever of Las Vegas, Nevada and twelve great grand children and one great-great grandson. David is preceded in death by his parents; Herschel and Ruth Hooton, and a grandson Jason Jeremiah Byram.
