Curtis Sherman

January 25, 1933 — May 19, 2013

Curtis Franklin Sherman was born on January 25, 1933, in Rock Creek, Oklahoma, to Carl Franklin and Ruby Mae Sutton Sherman. He defeated a long battle with cancer when he entered the gates of Heaven on May 19, 2013.
Curtis proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy earning the rank of Electrician II Class. He served during the Korean War from 195155 on the US Battleship St. Paul.
Mr. Sherman became a 32nd Degree Mason in 1979 and was also a member of the Shrine and York Rite organizations. He participated in numerous clinics as a member of the Shrine serving children with physical disabilities. He traveled with this organization to Mexico to escort children and their parents from this country to Hobbs in order that they might also participate in these clinics.
Mr. Sherman belonged to First Baptist Church of Hobbs where he served as a deacon fulfilling the many duties associated with the church. One of the services that he enjoyed performing was greeting and welcoming church members and visitors on Sunday morning and presenting them with the church bulletin.
Curtis married Shirley Ann Boles on November 23, 1956, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Through 56 years of marriage, they enjoyed traveling together, attending church functions with each other, working around their home and in their yard together and watching their children and grandchildren grow into productive citizens.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Shirley Sherman, of the home and two children Kellye Riley and her husband, Michael, of Monahans, Texas, and Mike Sherman and his wife, Reyes, of Victoria, Texas. He is also survived by what he considered his greatest blessings, his grandchildren a granddaughter, Allison Shelton and her husband, Clay, of Amarillo, Texas and grandsons, Shon Riley and his wife, Allison, of Odessa, Texas Trent Stradley and his wife, Gin, of Houston, Texas and Mike Sherman II. Additionally, he is survived by his sweet sister, Mary Abell, and her husband, Melvin, of Duncan, Oklahoma. And, finally, by his beloved pet, Spencer, a golden wedding anniversary gift from his family.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Funeral services for Curtis Sherman will be Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Hobbs under the direction of Chapel of Hope. Pallbearers for the services will be the grandsons Shon Riley, Trent Stradley and Clay Shelton as well as close friends, Dick Bender, Ken Smith and Roscoe Williams. Honorary pall bearers will be the members of the Masonic and Shrine Lodges. In state viewing of Mr. Sherman will be Tuesday, May 21, 2013 from 11:00 AM 6:00 PM and Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 8:00 8:30 AM at Chapel of Hope funeral home. Memorial donations may be provided to the Hobbs Senior Center, 200 East Park, Hobbs, NM, 88240. The family would additionally like to thank and honor the many dedicated nurses of Hospice Vista Care and Elite Home Care of Hobbs.
Curtis Sherman has been described by many as a very fine man who generously shared his time and talents with others. He sincerely loved his Lord and truly valued his family, and he will be greatly missed by many.
