Claude Williams

July 5, 1933 — October 11, 2014

Claude D. Williams 81, of Hobbs, passed away October 11, 2014 in Hobbs, NM. He was born July 5, 1933 in Roswell, NM.

Claude Williams was a fighter from the moment he was born to the moment he drew his last breath. Raised in Hobbs, he experienced a myriad of moments that molded and shaped him to become the man he was. He moved around and became a jack of all trades until a chance encounter with Ruth Cupp. After a whirlwind romance, they created a marriage that would last for 64 years and a bond that was everlasting. He created Williams Construction, a business that became a pivotal part in the construction of many of the buildings in Hobbs, especially downtown Hobbs. He formed a partnership with Zearl Young that would last for decades and played a part in all of the success he had throughout his life.

Upon retirement, Claude and Ruth dived into the world of softball and found something he truly loved. They sponsored teams, provided a helping hand, and created something great within the community. He had open arms and a warm smile to all the youth he sponsored. Because of their tireless efforts with countless teams,
Claude and Ruth were inducted into the New Mexico USSSA Softball Hall of Fame in 2009 and had a field named after them at the Ziaplex fields in Hobbs.

No matter what Claude faced in life, he always stayed strong, never gave up, and powered through. He instilled those same values in his children, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone and was truly a friend to all. He had an impact, big or small, on all those who crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of the home. Children Lourena Gonzales and Barbara Zamora Joe, grandchildren, Laurie Cortez, Sarah Gonzales, Joe Zamora, III and Christina Hernandez and 8 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Ziaplex Fields.

Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope, Hobbs, NM. www.chapelofhopefunerals.com
