Chloe Sims

August 15, 1921 — August 24, 2019

Hobbs

Chloe Swan Sims left this earthly home to join her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 24, 2019 at the age of 98 years and 9 days. Chloe was born August 15, 1921 in Spur, Texas to Andrew Jackson Slaton and Ollie Franklin (Pierce) Slaton. Chloe was the 13th child of 14 children. Chloe had 8 sisters and 5 brothers and being the next to the youngest of the 14 she had been the only remaining sibling for many years. She married Roscoe David “R.D.” Sims on July 18, 1942 in Hobbs, NM. R.D. preceded her in death in 1998. They enjoyed 56 years together and were blessed with 4 children: Betty Hansmeyer and husband David of Gainesville, TX, Floyd Sims and wife Cynthia of Eunice, NM, Martha Cone of Jay, OK and Bill Sims and wife Marilyn of Hobbs, NM, 5 grandchildren: Tammie and husband Mark, Randy and wife Sarah, Karen and husband Tim, Kayla, and John Dee, and 6 great-grandchildren: Tyler, Morgan, Gerald, Thomas, Katherine, and Tristan.

Chloe attended grade school in Spur, TX and graduated from Dickens High School in Dickens, TX in 1939. She and R.D. bought their ranch south of Eunice in 1944. They purchased the Victory Feed Store in 1957 and ran it until 1972 when they sold it to Richard Robinson. Chloe also worked at Lee’s Variety Store along with her good friend Bonnie Essman for many years. Chloe served as secretary of the Eunice Old Timer’s Association for 24 years and was the force behind getting the fiddling contest started at the Old Timer’s Reunions. This contest featured many world champion fiddlers throughout the years. She and R.D. were charter members of the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame. She was recognized as the Eunice Pioneer at the Lea County Fair and Rodeo in 1986. Chloe also enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and the Texas Rangers and greatly enjoyed listening to fiddle music.

Her four children were blessed to have Chloe as their mother, because she always put them first, sometimes doing without for herself. Chloe was a very loving and caring person, helping many people without asking for anything in return. She loved and trusted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Chloe was a member of the Methodist Church in Eunice. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity or church of your choice.
