Funeral services for Charles Arthur Slater Jr. are 10 a.m. Monday, June 11, at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home Chapel. Russell Hill will officiate. Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Cemetery.
Mr. Slatshy;er, 78, died June 6, 2007, at his home. He was born April 3, 1929, in San Angshy;elo, Texas.
C.A. Slater attended Moshy;nahans High School, Texas Tech University and Sul Ross University where he obtained a B.A. in accounting and played on the varsity tenshy;nis team. He met his wife, Wilma Dale Roberts, while attending SuI Ross University and they were married June 5, 1952, in Odessa, Texas.
He worked for the Western Company in Odessa, Texas, until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in Okinawa from 1952-1954 as an accounting clerk.
Upon discharge from the Army, C.A. returned to the Western Company in Odessa where their first child, Brenda Karyl Slater, was born in 1955. The family moved to Hobbs in 1957 where C.A. became a partshy;ner in Two State Tank Rental Company. Mr. Slater eventualshy;ly became the sole owner of Two State Tank Rental and served as president of this successful company until he retired in 1996. He also owned Sonny's Oilfield Services and had an interest in Oilfield Tank and Manufacturing Company. He was a member of the Lea County Planning and Zoning Board and past Chairman of the City of Hobbs Planning Board. He was also a member of the New Mexico Amigos.
In 1962, his son Mark Wayne Slater was born but died in 1983 during a boating accident on Lake Brownwood.
He played the trombone, but his passion was tennis and was the one to beat in Hobbs, N.M., for many years,
In addition to his wife, Wilma, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Steve Chambers of Gunter, Texas; three grandshy;daughters and their husbands, Amanda and Tim Payne of Irving, Texas, Missy and Clark Miller of McKinney, Texas, and Michelle and Brent Huse of West, Texas; a great-grandshy;son, CJ Miller of McKinney, Texas; two brothers and their wives, Burt and Billie Slater of Mineral Wells, Texas, and Dan and Kana Webster of Odessa, Texas; a sister in-law, Rheta Duncan of Odessa, Texas; a brother-in-law and his wife, Don and Billie Faye Roberts of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two cousins, J'Nevlyn Schrock of Crescent, Okla., and Aileen Moore of Gusfin, Texas; seven nephews, Burt, Kevin and Vance Slater, John and Charlie Webster, and Michael and Jason Duncan; and a niece, Melody Smith.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Wayne Slater; his mother Pauline Webster, and his father, Charles Arthur Slater Sr.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the dedicated team of careshy;givers who have served the Slaters for many years with a special note of thanks to Anita Eaves, RN, who managed the household staff.
Memorials may be made to VistaCare Hospice which the Slaters founded, 1515 Calle Sur, Hobbs, NM; and First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Snyder, Hobbs, NM.
