Betty Elder

Betty Jean Elder, 84, was born January 1, 1930 in Portales, NM, to George and Bonnie Forbes. She passed away November 16, 2014 in Hobbs. Cremation will take place.

Betty graduated from Hobbs High School in 1948. In June of 1948 she started her career with NM Oil Gas Committee. She worked for Continental Oil from 19501956, Ohio Oil from 19591979. Betty retired from Marathon Oil Co. after working there from 19711989. She worked in several departments while with Marathon. After retirement she worked for Chevron from 1990 to 1995. In recent years, Betty assisted in caring for her sister Virginia Gafford. She was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed spending a lot of time in her yard. Betty had a long affiliation with the First Christian Church, where her mother taught the Womans Sunday school class for almost 40 years.

She is survived by her son Lance Elder of Largo, FL, her brother Harry Forbes and wife Traci of Dallas, TX, her nephew George Gafford and wife Gina of Southlake, TX, her niece Bonnie Cummings of North Palm Beach, FL and numerous great nephews and nieces. She is also survived by her best friend Mary McGowan of Hobbs. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Virginia Gafford and Dorothy Forbes and brothers Sam Forbes and Merle Forbes.

A memorial service will be held Monday, November 24, 2:00 PM at Chapel of Hope with Mr. D. A. Cochran officiating. Chapel of Hope Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
