Barbara Jane Abbott, 82 died June 11, 2011, in Lubbock, Texas. She was born Barbara Jane Roat on July 20, 1928, in Worcester, Massachusetts, and lived in Hobbs, New Mexico, from 1946 until the time of her death.
A funeral service will be held at Chapel of Hope in Hobbs on Saturday, June 18th at 10:00 a.m. with David Matkins, John Ayers and Don Holladay officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery following the services.
Although born and raised in Shrewsbury, MA, near Boston, she lived most of her life in New Mexico after meeting Murrell Jack Abbott, a native of New Mexico, while he was serving in the United States Army. Barbara and Murrell were married on September 13, 1944, in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and moved to the Abbott family ranch near Kenna, New Mexico, where they lived until moving to Portales, New Mexico. In 1946 she moved to Hobbs as Murrell and his brother Clyde opened Abbott Brothers Drilling Contractors.
Barbaras love of travel and spirit of independence took her to such far away locations as the South Pacific, Greenland, Scotland, Ecuador, Russia, and especially Hawaii and Alaska, often as a solo traveler.
One central theme of Barbaras life was her love of animals and her unending thirst for knowledge about them.
Barbara is survived by three children Floyd Abbott wife Jan Abbott of Hobbs, Jeannie Riedl and husband Jack Riedl of Lebanon, Missouri, and Cindy Abbott and husband Mark Cotton of Hobbs, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband Murrell Jack Abbott and her daughter Cecelia Abbott and grandsons Robert Truesdell and Guy Herbert.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to one of Barbaras favorite charities would be preferred:
