Arlie M. Self, age 90, passed away April 9, 2019 at Autumn Grove Cottage, a caring and loving community in Spring, TX, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 1, 1928, in Wellman, TX, to Ira L. and Martha Self. On February 26, 1947, he married Lou Cook and they lived most of their married life in Hobbs, NM. Preceded in death by his wife, he moved back to his hometown of Morton, TX, until moving to Spring, TX. He was also preceded in death by three infant children, his parents, two brothers, four sisters, and one granddaughter. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Roger & Kathy Self of Garland, TX, daughter and son-in-law, Sandy & Bill Droke of Houston, TX, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and one brother, Jimmie Self of Morton, TX.
Arlie worked as an employee of Lea County Road Department for seven years before going to work in the oilfield as a roughneck, derrickman and driller. He worked for a number of drilling contractors across southwest New Mexico and the Permian Basin. He was also employed as a driver for NL Acme Tools. Arlie later returned to work for Lea County in the County Detention Facility where he was Officer of the Year 1992. He worked for Lea County Detention until his retirement.
He was a member of First Assembly of God Church and later attended Bethel Assembly of God where he was responsible for maintenance. He was a mechanic and handyman, being able to fix or repair just about anything. He also enjoyed watching western movies, playing the guitar and listening to music. After retirement, he began a new hobby of building guitars, which brought him much joy.
