Alfred "AJ" Joe Chavez, age 70, of Hobbs, New Mexico, passed away on October 18, 2023. He was born on August 17, 1953, in Clovis, New Mexico. Alfred attended the NMJC on scholarship through the gymnastics program, specializing in the still rings and competing across the United States. It was during his college years that he met the love of his life, Lydia Chavez, whom he married on February 16, 1974. Alfred began his career in the Oil & Gas Industry and dedicated himself to providing for his family. He and Lydia raised three children in Hobbs, instilling in them the values of love and care. Alfred was known for his tremendous sense of humor and his unwavering determination. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
In his spare time, Alfred enjoyed various hobbies. He was an avid outdoorsman, skilled in fishing and hunting. He cherished camping trips with his family and friends. Alfred was also a golfer and a member of the Paisano Golf Club, participating in numerous tournaments. His green thumb was evident in his well-manicured yard and flower garden. Alfred was a formidable pool player who often competed in tournaments. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren, whom he adored.
Alfred is survived by his loving wife, Lydia Chavez, and their children: Orlando Chavez, Jessica Chavez, and Stephanie Fuentes. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren: Valeria Taylor, Alfred G Chavez, Anthony Chavez-Gerhardt, Nathaniel Carrizales, Michael Gerhardt, Alena Gerhardt, Jacob Carrizales, Olivia Fuentes, Ast'n Chavez, Jaycee Chavez-Canava, a great-granddaughter Elisabella Taylor as well as his siblings: Andrew Chavez, Erlinda Tomlinson, Danny Chavez (Norma), Rose Surratt, Christine Morgan (Bob), Ruben Chavez (Tracy), and Margaret Fritz (Edwin). Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Lucy Chavez, and his sister, Gloria Phillips.
Alfred's career spanned over 46 years, beginning with Phillips Petroleum as a welder's helper and later transitioning to positions as a mechanic and analyst. Despite the company undergoing name changes, Alfred remained a dedicated employee until his well-deserved retirement.
