Albert Hammond

August 12, 1938 — August 14, 2010

Albert Hollis Hammond, 72, a longtime resident of Hobbs, died Saturday, August 14, in Hobbs. He was born August 12, 1938, in Monroe, Louisiana.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at First United Methodist Church.

In 1952 at the age of 13, Als family moved to Hobbs from Monroe, Louisiana, where he attended Hobbs schools. He graduated from Hobbs High in 1958. Al eventually went to work for a longtime local business Good Eats Bakery. He later received his barbering certificate from Lubbock Barber College and began his barbering career in 1966. He served the community of Hobbs in his field for 43 years. During his early adulthood, he was a member of the Hobbs Jaycees. Al was a member of the Hobbs Jaycees and was chairman of Veterans Memorial which is located at the entrance of Memory Garden Cemetery.

Al and Carol Skinner had a 18 month courtship from early 1998 to June 22, 1999, when they traveled to Homer, Alaska, and were united in marriage. His hobbies include working with the Lea County Humane Society, playing golf, traveling and gardening. Hobbs Eagle sports were very important to him. He helped on the sidelines chain gang during the Eagle football games and was an avid supporter of the Eagle basketball teams. Al was a member of The Fellowship of Believers of Hobbs.

Al was preceded in death by his eldest son, Joel Kim, mother Marie Martin and father Larue Hollie Hammond. Survivors include his wife, Carol Jean Hammond, a sister Patricia Krumm of Homer, Alaska, a half brother Tommy Martin and a half sister, Debra Levy, both whom reside in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Al leaves behind 5 children, 1 daughter Gwen ShockGlen of Stephenville, Texas and 4 sons, Bill HammondAmy of Schertz, Texas, Jay HammondBrenda of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, Glen HammondJackie of Farmington, New Mexico, and Todd Hammond of Hobbs as well as 2 stepsons, Jay Skinner of Los Angeles, California, and Jim SkinnerValerie of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchildren.
