Agnes Maurine Mitchell Huston Bostick
August 27, 1919-March 20, 2018
Agnes was a lady far ahead of her time and was successful in all that she set out to accomplish. She had a life philosophy of working as hard as you can, dancing as much as you can, and serving the community to the best of your ability. She succeeded in all of the above. After graduating from Olton High School, she obtained a degree from Draughn's Business College in Lubbock, Texas. She married Earl Huston on March 15, 1940, and they lived in Stanton, Big Springs, Clovis, Ruidoso, and Lovington before settling down in Hobbs, New Mexico in 1955. The Mitchell family had many relatives in Throckmorton County and surrounding areas.
Agnes and Earl founded Huston Cleaners on South Turner Street in Hobbs then later bought Parkway Cleaners. Being quite the innovators, they then opened substations called Fashion Cleaners, Westview Cleaners, and Bel Aire Cleaners. Agnes worked the front at the main cleaners and knew everyone in town - never forgetting a face, name or phone number. She owned and ran Parkway after Earl's death in 1972 until she retired in her seventies. She married Burch Bostick in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 15, 1984, and they enjoyed traveling until his death. When Agnes was 80, she met Herschell Hightower, and they remained friends and companions until his death.
She was an active member of the Hobbs Business and Professional Women's Club, the American Business Women's Association, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Delta Lambda Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. She loved working with the Miss Hobbs Pageant and Boys and Girls State. In 1983, she was named Woman of the Year. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church for many years.
She was a great inspiration to her children and grandchildren. She will be missed, but her memory and her contributions will live on in each of the loved ones she left behind. She is survived by daughters, Jackie Huston Hyatt of Las Vegas, Nevada and Judy Huston Grounds (Bob) of St. Amant, Louisiana; daughter-in-law, Peggy Huston of Casper, Wyoming; stepchildren, Linda Bostick Rice, Charlie Bostick both of Hobbs, New Mexico, and Margie Bostick Newsom of Branson, Missouri and their children; granddaughters Debbie Huston Braeger, Michelle Grounds Waguespack (Ryan), Brenda Huston Bowker (Ryan), Shana Hyatt (Derek) Stott, Alison Grounds (Ashley Derrick); and her beloved lapdog KoKo. To fulfill her legacy, she also leaves behind fifteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Mabel (Michael) Mitchell, sisters Elda Gayle Mitchell Willis and Ethel Blanche (Babe) Mitchell Gerhardt, husbands Earl Huston and Burch Bostick, long time friend, Herschell Hightower, and son Mike Huston of Casper, Wyoming.
A special thanks to St. Joseph Hospice for their loving care of our mom over the last few years and to all the caregivers who have touched our lives especially Ms. Olga Sifuentes who loved and cared for our Mom like she was her own mother.
